MG1/MD1 ECU Unlock FAQs: BMW B48, B58, S58 and MD1 Support

The latest update brings new BMW BENCH Mode unlock support for B48, B57 and B58 ECUs. In this Part 2 Q&A, we answer several common questions about MG1/MD1 ECU unlocking, including OBD flashing, dedicated adapters, Bosch MD1 support, encrypted TC29X ECUs and sector writing.

Q1. Can MG1CS201 and MG1CS024 DMEs on BMW B58 and S58 be flashed with OTS tunes via OBD?

Answer: Not supported at the moment.

The current function only provides lossless/permanent unlock for supported ECUs. It does not currently enable OTS tuning through OBD.

For the supported procedure, please use the recommended bench mode operation.

Q2. Will a Dedicated Adapter Be Released?

Answer: A dedicated solder-free adapter cannot currently be developed for this unlock method.

At present, lossless unlock is supported for BMW applications. For other brands and models, lossless unlock is not supported.

The current procedure for unsupported applications requires opening the ECU case and performing soldering work, including removing the required resistors. Because of this hardware procedure, a dedicated solder-free unlock adapter is not currently available.

Q3. Is Read/Write Unlocking Supported for India MD1 TC375?

Answer: Not supported at present.

The current chip unlock support is available for selected MD1 TC29X series and MG1 TC298/TC299 series applications.

The MD1 TC375 is not currently supported for read/write unlocking.

Q4. Can Bosch MD1 ECUs Produced After 2020 Be Unlocked for Read/Write Access?

Answer: Most encrypted MD1 ECUs using TC29X-series chips from June 2020 onward are now supported.

The latest support includes many encrypted Bosch MD1 ECUs equipped with TC29X-series chips.

For example:

  • MD1S012 – supported
  • MD1S003 – supported
  • MD1S016 with TC399 – not supported for unlock at present

Therefore, ECU production date and the specific MCU/chip type should be checked before attempting an unlock.

Q5. Can You Write to Sectors 1–3 and Then Use OBD Flash Tools Such as BM3 or MHD?

Answer: No.

Writing to sectors 1–3 is not supported.

The current version provides permanent/lossless unlock for supported applications, but read/write operations are limited to the functions performed by the supported device.

It does not currently provide the type of sector 1–3 writing required to use external OBD flash tools such as Boot mode3 (BM3) or MHD.

The latest update expands unlock coverage for selected BMW MG1/MD1 ECUs, including new BENCH Mode support for B48, B57 and B58 applications.

However, support depends on the exact ECU model, MCU/chip and production date. Before starting an unlock operation, always check the supported ECU list and connection method for the specific application.

This Q&A is based on the current support information covered in the guide and may change with future software updates.
