Mercedes FBS4 transmission modules are known for being expensive to replace.
In many cases, a dealership will recommend installing a brand-new TCU and performing online programming, which can cost a large amount.
A used junkyard TCU may seem like a cheaper solution, but most FBS4 modules are locked to another VIN and immobilizer system. Without proper processing, the replacement module will not work on the vehicle.
In this test, we used OBDSTAR G3 to complete a full Mercedes FBS4 TCU clone procedure in BENCH mode.
The setup included:
KeyMaster G3
MP001 Programmer
TCU Adapter
14V 5A Regulated Power Supply
Inside the ECU Flasher menu, select:
TCM → Mercedes-Benz → VGS4 NAG2

The original TCU is connected first to read ECU information and backup the original transmission data.

After saving the file, the original module is disconnected and the used replacement TCU is connected.

Using the Reset Virgin (Renew) Renew function inside Advanced Functions, the used FBS4 TCU is successfully virginized.

Next, the saved original data file is loaded through Data Transfer (Personalization).

This process transfers:
- Original IMMO data
- VIN information
- Transmission shift logic
- Personalization data
Once completed, the replacement TCU becomes fully compatible with the vehicle and works as a plug-and-play module.
For workshops repairing Mercedes transmission systems, OBDSTAR X300 Classic G3 provides a practical solution for FBS4 TCU cloning, virginizing, and data transfer without relying on expensive dealer programming.
